WHAT DO I LIKE NOW? BRIGHT SILK SCARVES!!!!!

It is interesting how my work as a personal stylist continues to reveal innovative ways of using “old” pieces. Even as a style expert I sometimes find myself troubled by selecting an outfit that is outside of my own comfort zone. However, that is exactly what I must do in order to develop new perspectives into my clients’ image.

My recent work with Tampa-based anchor and reporter, Alicia Roberts, allowed me to discover a new approach to making an outfit stand-out. Even though Alisha is a former beauty-queen and a style-expert herself, she found herself mimicking the same type of outfit that other anchors were wearing. As a face of the local NBC network, she wanted to represent not only a pretty face, but use her image strategically so that the viewers would remember her based on multiple aspects of her work. I had to use my business acumen and think as an overall image consultant rather than just a personal stylist.

I came to understand that one of the major challenges working in broadcast media is not only getting noticed but getting remembered. There are numerous anchors and reporters in the Tampa area and beyond so standing out is extremely important if you want to become a house-hold name someday. I knew that we needed to start working on Alicia Roberts’ “brand”, rather than to continue following the trend of the other style conforming anchors (sport coats and silk blouses). I wondered what we could use to differentiate her image that her viewers could identify her by. She showed me several of her standard professional outfits, which were nice, but screamed compliance. We needed to make her image different, we needed to use something that has not been capitalized on before which would stick in the minds of her viewers.

My solution… BRIGHT SILK SCARVES! I played with the oversized bright pink and orange scarf we got from one of the most surprising places, Talbots, and used it in various ways to accentuate her attire. I used the scarf as a blouse illusion under her dark chocolate blazer, bringing life to the forgotten piece.. I used it as a belt for her bright red, almost Christmassy-like velour jacket by bringing the attention away from the unconventional color and to the smart color combination. Lastly, inspired by French art of “scarf-ing”, we came up with several ways to tie the scarf around her neck introducing different lengths and knots and add some color and uniqueness to the outfit.
Alicia was ecstatic, as she no longer needed to get rid of the pieces she thought were unwearable, and she learned about a fresh way to brand her image. The results were almost instantaneous! Even before I left Tampa, she shared with me several e-mails from her viewers complimenting her on the new look. Little did they know that the pieces we used were worn a million times before, but by adding this signature accessory to her more bland outfits seemed to make the difference! As part of this experience we not only updated Alicia’s image, but expanded her viewer’s audience. By using scarves as her signature accessory she was able to attract not only her regular viewers but also fashionistas who wait for her to come on the air and see how she will use her scarf next. Did I mention that her work day starts at 3 a.m.? That’s dedication.

www.chicgiraffe.com PERSONAL STYLIST TESTIMONIAL by Alicia Roberts

Alicia Roberts
Anchor & Reporter
Tampa, FL
WFLA-TV News Channel 8

" Working with www.chicgiraffe.com and Oksana Levin demonstrates a talented and diverse understanding of the fashion world and international trends that is both rare and special. What makes her especially unique is her keen ability to translate her designer interpretations to all body shapes, sizes, and lifestyles. Working as a television anchor in Tampa, I am constantly judged on my professional wardrobe and image. One meeting with Oksana helped me transform my style, using new combinations of pieces within my existing wardrobe, combined with a pairings of 'pop' accents and minor wardrobe tweaks that have already been noticed and highly received. In literally a few days, the compliments started coming in about my suits, belts, and style... all of which were put into high gear with the professional advice from Oksana. I also have a better sense of my overall style and fashion image, something that I believe so many people struggle with. This knowledge is helping me to shop smarter, use my wardrobe as a means to define my television presence, and feel more confident about my body and self image. I cannot tell you how invaluable my time with Oksana has been professionally and personally. I would highly recommend her for your image consulting needs."

DURING THE COLD MONTHS TRY THIS NEW TRENT - NECK WARMERS!!!!

We all make purchases that we second guess. The problem arises when you notice a giant heaping pile of accessories in your closet that you rationalize as “closet decorations.” Still, we secretly hope that these items will come back into style someday. But styles and trends aren't always limited to the current fashions we see on TV or what we read in the latest fashion magazines. Sometimes your own person style can come out when you finally get the courage to reach into that giant heaping pile in your closet and test an item out. Now I'm not telling you to go ahead and wear those MC Hammer style parachute pants that you've had since the 80's but I am telling you to stop limiting yourself to current trends and use a little of your own creativity. Who knows, it may just work.
Passionate about setting trends, I am in constant search of new style ideas. As a fearless pioneer looking for a chance to experiment, I constantly stroll along Newbury street in Boston and stop in each and every little boutique. Late last summer I could not help but stop in all the boutiques featuring a variety of merchandise starting from Christmas décor (yes, this was in August), and “magic” ceramic frogs that are suppose to bring good luck in the New Year. There are also a variety of boutiques on Newburry Sreet that feature outdated but once chic inventory. Stopping in at one of these stores, I searching through the piles of silk and cashmere and finally stumbled upon a fur piece which wasn’t even remotely related to 20th century fashion. My newly found treasure was a bulky, brown-red colored neck warmer. I wasn’t sure what I would wear it with, but I thought the idea of introducing something new into my wardrobe, even so unconventional, was going to be fun! I brought it home and, naturally, forgot about it for year or so.

Last weekend, while packing my summer apparel (with tears in my eyes) , I pulled out my winter clothes and found the warmer. This time it did not look so strange. Somehow I knew exactly how I would wear it. The options were endless. I started by wearing it over the luxurious cashmere wool winter coat, adding a unique accent to a beautiful but somewhat ordinary piece. I then wore it over a white tank top combining it with a pair of grey wool striped wide-leg pants. The combination looked great- funky and sexy at the same time, I loved it! Not only was my look updated, but I was featuring a trend that was unique to me at the moment and wasn't being forced upon me by the designer world.
Even though I see people wear warmers, I feel accomplished (yet again) as a personal stylist because the most rewarding perk is seeing people wear a piece that you discovered before it became a trend. I encourage all of you to think outside the box, reach into the masses in your closets and find your inner stylist. Or if you need a little help checkout the neck warmers that I love on the Chic Giraffe accessories page or contact me with questions or requests for personal style advice @ chicgiraffe@gmail or customercare@chicgiraffe.com

8 WAYS TO BE A SMARTER SHOPPER

"The world has changed, and so has the way we think about what we need. But guess what? It is safe to go back to the stores and thanks to our eight-commandments guide.
Welcome back, shopping! We missed you!

#1. Know what you own (down to your socks).
There is nothing as freeing as a closet weed-out. Sort out your makeup, too!

#2. Spend within your means. See ya credit card debt!
Yes, you can shop again. You just have to know what your budget is before you start.
#3.Buy what is worth to you.
Depending on your lifestyle and career, pick the pieces that you can maximaze the use of (e.g. classics always work best)

#
4. Before you buy, take a quiz offered by Tommy Hilfiger that goes:
Does this truly fit your bodym not just the body you wish you had?
Are you itching to put it on now?
Would someone who sees you on the street think, She looks GREAT?
Will you want to wear this next month, next season, next year?

Only make a purchase if you can answer YES to ALL.

#5.Rewear and reuse all stuff with pride.
As we all know, fashion always comes back and everyone of us has classics that can be worn in a billion of different ways. Use your imagination and don't be afraid to not only follow the rules, but break them. That's called being trendy!

#6.Get the trends for LESS!
Don't feel like spending a fortune on a new stylish piece, invest in a new set of scarves or accessories. They will instantly update your look and make everyone notice your "new" outfit.

#7. Never have a buyer's remorse.
Avoid spontaneous purchases. Think about the pieces you currently own and if the new item will work with any or hopefully, several of them.

#8. Be more inclined to buy, when it is for a cause.
Search our for pieces that will help people in need or sold by a retailer that contributes to a charitable organization. Purchase will feel so much better.
